Nov 08, Stephen rated it really liked it Shelves: In the mold of his earlier histories of Paris, New York, and London, Augias moves perceptively through twenty-seven centuries of Roman augiaa, shedding new light on a cast of famous, and infamous, historical figures and uncovering secrets and conspiracies that have shaped the city without our ever knowing it.

They are very interesting but it took awhile to get used to the sehreti style of writing. The history of Rome could never fit into one book so Augias chooses the stories that he deems befitting of the city’s personality. The stories highlight various bits of history and later, as Augiqs walked through Rome, I could recognize remnants of that history. It’s neither a travelogue nor a tour guide.

This was a totally enjoyable book; and the better one knows Rome, the more one will enjoy it. He is an atheist. The following week I was traveling on a city bus and realized that I was more aware of the city we were passing through. I really loved this book, primarily because ro,a exactly suited my needs at the time.

I felt like every chapter had some insights about the history of the city of Rome, the people that have lived there over the years, and the scandals that have shaped it’s story. He doesn’t follow chronological order, but of course visitors don’t experience the city that way either; Renaissance palaces are built segreeti top of ancient ruins, medieval churches emerge from the skeletons of pagan temples.


Augias is a masterful storyteller, who doesn’t shy back from instilling moral judgement between the lines. A cross between a travelogue, a history and a memoir.
